Refuge de Bellachat

Refuge de Bellachat sits at 2,136m on the north slope of the Val d'Hérens in Valais. The standard approach follows the hiking trail from Evolène, a valley village 15km south. Most hikers allow 3–4 hours from Evolène to reach the refuge. The route gains 900m steadily through pastures and rocky terrain. You can also approach from Les Haudères via the Lac de Moiry area, though this is less common. The refuge serves as a base for day hikes into the surrounding peaks and glaciers.

The refuge is run independently and offers 30–40 beds in shared dormitory rooms. Meals include hearty dinners and packed lunches for trekkers. A basic breakfast is provided. The building has running water and toilet facilities but no shower. The refuge opens from mid-June through mid-September, weather permitting. This timing covers the main hiking season and protects the access trails from snow and mud.

June and September are quieter but weather can be unstable, particularly rain and occasional snow in early June. The refuge is closed weekdays in shoulder months, so confirm opening before planning a visit outside peak season.
