Refuge du Plan de L'Aiguille

Refuge du Plan de L'Aiguille sits at 2,207m in the Valais Alps, above the Zinal valley. Reach it from Zinal village (1,675m) via a marked trail that climbs steeply through larch forest then alpine meadow—allow 2.5 to 3 hours. The hut serves as a base for traverses toward Ayer and onward routes across the Bella Tola massif. It's also a stopping point on the Sentier de Zinal, a popular multi-day hike connecting the major peaks and passes in this region.

The refuge has around 80 beds in dormitory rooms. Meals are available: expect hearty, fuel-appropriate food. There's no shower, but you'll find running water and basic toilet facilities. The hut operates from mid-June through late September, weather permitting. Winter closing is firm—mountain conditions make the approach dangerous in snow. Staff are accustomed to mixed-language visitors but speaking some French helps.

Book directly with the hut by phone or email at least 4 weeks ahead for July and August. The refuge fills quickly during peak season, especially weekends. Outside July-August, booking further out is less critical. Arrive with cash on hand; card payment options are limited. The hut lies on a busy through-route, so solo hikers often find space even when group reservations are full—ask when you call.
