Refuge de la Pierre À Bérard sits at 1922m in the Val d'Hérémence, a quiet side valley in the Valais. You reach it via a 2.5-hour hike from Le Chargeur village, following the valley floor with steady elevation gain through forest and alpine meadow. This is the approach for most hikers. The hut works as a base for day walks in the surrounding peaks and as a stage on longer traverses through the Valais backcountry.
The refuge has 40 beds across mixed dormitories and a few smaller rooms. Meals are available: expect straightforward mountain food cooked on-site. There's a basic bar. The hut is staffed year-round, though winter services are limited and access may require snowshoes or ski mountaineering experience. Phone ahead if you're coming in winter. The building is simple and functional rather than luxurious—focus is on practical shelter and good food.
Book directly by email or phone as soon as your dates are set. July and August fill quickly; aim for at least 4 weeks ahead. Shoulder season (June, September, early October) is less pressured.
