Refuge du Couvercle

Refuge du Couvercle sits at 2,683m in the Valais Alps, deep in the Vallon de la Forclaz. Most hikers reach it from Châtelard in 3–4 hours via the Vallée du Trient, a steady climb through alpine meadows and scree. The hut works equally well as a waypoint on longer traverses toward Mont-Blanc or as a base for day walks to the Glacier du Trient and surrounding peaks. The approach is well-marked and non-technical, though loose stone is common on upper sections.
The refuge runs 128 beds across multiple dormitories, making it a reliable option when other huts are full. The SAC manages it to standard mountain-hut standards: simple meals (soup, pasta, mountain fare), tap water, gas heating. A few half-beds suit solo hikers. The kitchen supplies hot water for flasks. The hut opens mid-June through September depending on snow conditions—check before planning winter or shoulder-season visits. Pit toilets and limited washing facilities are part of the deal.
Book direct by email or phone as soon as your dates are set. July weekends and mid-August fill completely 3–4 months ahead. Earlier in June and after mid-September you'll find space with shorter notice. Confirm the opening date for your intended season. The hut sits remote enough that resupply is impossible; bring or rely on what they serve. A torch is useful—rooms are basic and nights are cold at this elevation.
