Refuge Belvedere

Rifugio Belvedere sits at 2,552m on the border between Valais and Uri, reached via the Gotthard region. From Gotthard hospice, hike 2.5 hours southwest across open alpine meadows to reach the hut. The final approach crosses exposed terrain with minimal shelter—bring wind protection year-round. Access is possible from late June through September; snow blocks the route outside this window. Winter mountaineers with skis can reach it in spring conditions, but check conditions before attempting this.
The refuge offers 15 beds across simple dormitory rooms with wool blankets and shared washing facilities. Evening meals and breakfast use local ingredients where possible; a small selection of drinks and snacks sells at cost. The hut operates on solar power and rainwater collection, so showers are cold water only. This is a working mountain environment, not a hotel. The caretaker maintains the hut solo and manages water and waste carefully. The hut closes from October through May.
Book directly by email at least 4 weeks ahead for July and August. July weekends fill completely by early June. September offers far better availability. The hut does not accept credit cards or advance deposits—pay in full on arrival in cash (Swiss francs preferred). Phone contact is unreliable at this elevation, so email is your only option.
