Refuge Gattascosa

Rifugio Gattascosa sits at 1,993m in the Valais region, accessible by hiking from the village of Saas-Grund. The approach takes roughly 2–3 hours depending on your fitness and the route you choose. The hut serves as a solid staging point for day walks and multi-day traverses across the Saas valley.
The refuge accommodates around 40 guests in simple dormitory-style rooms. Meals are basic but adequate—expect traditional Alpine fare. The hut has drinking water and flush toilets, which is standard for this altitude. It operates year-round, though staffing and meal service may be limited outside the main hiking season (June–September).
Book by phone directly with the hut, particularly for July and August when mountain huts across the region fill quickly. Contact them 4–6 weeks ahead if you need guaranteed beds and dinner. The hut is popular with base camps for day hikers exploring the surrounding terrain, so expect crowds on clear weekends during summer. Outside peak season, advance booking is less critical but still recommended.
