Refuge Magià

Refuge Magià sits at 2,007m in the Vallemaggia region of Ticino, in the southern Swiss Alps. The hut is reached from the Maggia valley via a hiking trail that takes roughly 2.5 hours from the village of Groppi. The approach is well-marked and moderately graded, gaining about 800m elevation. In summer, you can also approach from the Cristallina massif side, which offers slightly longer but more scenic routing.

The refuge accommodates 60 guests in dormitory-style rooms. Evening meals are substantial and use local ingredients; vegetarian options are available. The kitchen provides hot drinks and snacks throughout the day. Basic facilities include running water, pit toilets, and gas heating. The hut operates from late May through late September, with the busiest period in July and August when weather is most reliable. Outside these months, advance notice is required.

Book at least 4 weeks ahead for July and August. Contact the hut directly by email or phone to confirm availability and meals. Half-board (bed and evening meal) is standard; full board (bed, breakfast, and dinner) can be arranged. Payment is typically cash only—confirm when you book. The hut closes completely from October through May.
