Dom Na Smrekovcu

Dom Na Smrekovcu sits at 1,377m on Smrekovcu in the Karavanke range between Austria and Slovenia. Reach it from the Slovenian village of Kranjska Gora in 2.5 hours. The trail climbs steadily through beech and spruce forest, gaining 650m. The Austrian approach from the Loibl Pass takes 3 hours and is slightly less steep. The hut marks a natural stop on the Karavanke ridge traverse and gives access to surrounding peaks including Hochobir (2,139m) to the north.
The hut has 60 beds spread across dormitory rooms and a handful of doubles. Meals are basic Austrian mountain fare: hearty soups, schnitzel, and regional cheese. The kitchen will prepare packed lunches. Water comes from a spring. There's no shower, though washing facilities are adequate. The hut opens year-round but confirm winter conditions before visiting—the Karavanke can hold snow through April. The warden lives on-site and manages the hut independently.
Book by calling ahead. July and August weekends fill quickly. Avoid peak periods or ring at least 4 weeks in advance. Off-season (October to April) you can usually arrive without reservation. Payment is cash only—bring euros.
