About

The Klagenfurter Hütte sits at 1,664 m in the Karawanken of Carinthia, tucked into the Bärental above Feistritz im Rosental and directly below the Kosiak (Geißberg, 2,024 m). Built in 1906 and owned by the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV), Sektion Klagenfurt, it is one of the best-loved bases in this quiet border range. Walkers use it as a springboard for the Kosiak, which rises about an hour above the hut, and for the Hochstuhl (2,249 m) — the highest peak in the Karawanken — whose summit route includes a via ferrata graded B/C. The hut is notably family-friendly, with a natural play area, two cosy wood-stove parlours and a welcome for dogs, and in winter it serves as a starting point for the Kosiak ski tour. Sleeping capacity is roughly 14 beds plus a mattress dormitory. It is normally open from June through October, with only irregular winter service. The standard approach climbs from the Bärental car park past the Johannsenruhe in about 1.5 to 2 hours, while longer routes ascend from the Bodental and from Feistritz in the valley.
