Koschutahaus / Koča Pod Košuto

The Koschutahaus sits at 1,280m on the northern slopes of the Koschuta massif in the Karavanke range, straddling the Austrian-Slovenian border in Carinthia. Reach it from the village of Eisenkappel-Zellach via marked trails; the main approach takes roughly 2.5 hours uphill. The hut serves as a base for traversing this quieter range and accessing peaks like the Koschuta (2,112m) itself. The terrain is steep and forested lower down, opening to alpine meadows and rock as you climb.

The Naturfreunde manages this refuge on both the Austrian and Slovenian sides of the border. The hut has capacity for around 30 guests in simple dormitory and double rooms. Full meals and packed lunches are available; the kitchen handles vegetarian diets and other dietary requirements on request. Showers are available, a practical feature on a multi-day traverse. The hut operates year-round, though conditions above 1,600m are winter-serious and demand experience with snow, ice and avalanche terrain. Summer (June to September) sees the most reliable weather and trail conditions.

Book directly with the hut by phone or email at least 3-4 weeks in advance during July and August. Peak weekends can fill quickly even outside school holidays. The location's position on a lesser-known Austrian-Slovenian crossing means you'll encounter fewer crowds than on the Triglav or Kamnik Alps routes, but the hut is popular with local Naturfreunde members and weekend walkers.
