Wackendorfer Alm

Wackendorfer Alm sits at 1576m in the Nockberge range, Carinthia's rolling limestone plateau. Reach it from Bad Kleinkirchheim via the Petzen valley, a hiking approach of 2.5 to 3 hours depending on your exact start point. The route follows marked trails through beech forest and alpine pasture. In summer, a jeep track provides an alternative if you're not hiking. The hut works well as a base for exploring the Nockberge—trails radiate to nearby peaks and traverses along the ridge system.
The hut offers basic mountain accommodation with around 30 beds in shared rooms. Meals focus on traditional Carinthian fare: kasnocken, kaiserschmarrn, and straightforward mountain fare cooked on-site. A small bar serves hot drinks and local beer. Water comes from the hut's own spring. Facilities are simple: no WiFi or power sockets in rooms, basic washrooms with cold water. The hut operates June through September, weather dependent. Winter closure is firm.
Book 2-3 months in advance for July and August weekends, as the hut fills with families and hiking groups. May and September offer quieter visits with shorter lead times. Contact the hut directly by phone—no online booking system exists. Half-board (bed plus dinner and breakfast) is standard. The warden can advise on route conditions and shepherd you toward quiet ridge walks or full traverses of the Nockberge.
