Obiralm

Obiralm sits at 1,272m on a broad alpine meadow in the Nockberge range in southern Carinthia. Reach it from Reichenau in the Metnitz Valley via the village of Patergassen—allow 2 hours on foot from the road end, or drive partway up a rough forest track and walk the final 45 minutes. The hut also connects to longer ridge walks through the Nockberge, a limestone plateau known for open, rolling terrain rather than dramatic peaks. Multiple day routes radiate from here into the surrounding network of accessible high-altitude meadows.
The hut offers 80 beds across simple shared dormitories and a handful of double rooms. The kitchen serves hearty Austrian fare at lunch and dinner; self-catering is possible with notice. Water comes from a spring. Facilities are basic but functional—no hot showers, pit toilets. The hut operates year-round, though staffing and services thin considerably between October and April. It's managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV).
Book directly by phone or email at least 4 weeks ahead for summer weekends. July and August draw weekend crowds from nearby towns; spring and autumn are quieter. The hut suits hikers wanting accessible alpine meadow walking and simple mountain hospitality without the infrastructure or crowds of more famous Austrian hut destinations.
