Glocknerhaus
4.2About
The Glocknerhaus stands at 2,132 m in the Glockner group, at a spot known as Elisabeth-Ruhe directly on the Großglockner High Alpine Road below the Franz-Josefs-Höhe and the Pasterze glacier. Owned by the Klagenfurt section of the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV), it is unusual among Alpine huts in being reachable directly by road, which makes it both a comfortable base for mountaineers and ski tourers and an easy day destination for visitors touring the pass. Beyond overnight lodging it doubles as a training and seminar centre. Accommodation totals 72 places: 38 beds in private rooms and 34 in the dormitory (Lager). The hut serves meals and refreshments and is a natural staging point for the Glockner Trail and for excursions towards the Pasterze and the Großglockner itself. Because it sits on the toll road, its season follows the road's opening, running roughly from May to late October; there is no winter room. Access could hardly be simpler in summer: you can drive to the door, or take the hiking bus up from Heiligenblut. Walkers who prefer to arrive on foot can climb the Haritzersteig from Heiligenblut in about three hours, gaining close to 1,288 m.
