Salmhütte

The Salmhütte sits at 2,644m in the Zillertal Alps of East Tyrol. Reach it from Mayrhofen via the Zillertal valley, heading toward Stilluptal. The main approach takes 3.5 hours from Mayrhofen, following a well-marked trail through forest and alpine meadow. An alternative route from Zell im Zillertal adds about 30 minutes but avoids the valley floor. Summer access is straightforward; winter snow closes the hut from November to May.
The hut offers 30 beds in mixed dormitories and a small number of double rooms. Meals include a solid Austrian breakfast and three-course dinner featuring regional dishes—the kitchen handles vegetarian requests with notice. The Salmhütte has a wood-fired stove, simple toilet and shower facilities, and solar power for lighting. Water comes from the mountain spring. This is a working hut run by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV), focused on hikers rather than climbers, though it serves as a base for scrambles into the surrounding peaks.
Book directly by phone or through the OeAV system 6–8 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Mid-week slots and June/September visits usually have availability with 2–3 weeks' notice. The hut enforces a two-night minimum during peak season. Expect 30–40 other guests on summer weekends. Arrive by 5pm to secure your bed and eat dinner at 7pm.
