Karl-Volkert-Haus

The Karl-Volkert-Haus sits at 2,148m in the Defereggen Valley, a quiet corner of East Tyrol overlooked by most Alpine tourists. Reach it from the village of Hopfgarten by following the Schwarzach stream valley for roughly 2 hours on a well-marked path. The hut is accessible year-round via this approach, though snow may slow your pace in winter. The Defereggen Valley is less crowded than the Ötztal or Zillertal, and the Karl-Volkert-Haus reflects that: it's a proper working mountain hut, not a resort.
The hut offers 40 beds across mixed and private rooms. Meals focus on hearty Austrian fare—expect Kasnocken, Kaiserschmarrn, and solid soups.
