Kalser Tauernhaus

The Kalser Tauernhaus sits at 1754m in the Kalsertal valley, a long side valley that branches south from the Zillertal near Kals. The hut is accessible by road in summer, a 10km drive from the village of Kals. Hikers approaching from the north typically walk 3.5 hours up the valley floor following the Kalser Ache stream. The approach is steady and straightforward, gaining about 700m elevation. Most parties use the hut as a base for traverses and scrambles in the surrounding Lienzer Dolomites and Schobergruppe rather than as an overnight stop on a longer route.
The hut has 30 beds across multiple rooms and offers half-board accommodation. Meals are simple and filling. Water is available, though the Kalser Ache runs cold and fast nearby if you need to refill. The hut opens mid-May and closes in October. The managing authority is the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV). Evening entertainment is minimal—this is a working hut for climbers and walkers, not a social hub.
Book directly with the hut 6-8 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. The hut fills regularly in good weather during the main season. June and September offer quieter conditions. Phone or email ahead to confirm opening dates in shoulder months, as early season snow sometimes delays the opening.
