Ötscherschutzhaus

Ötscherschutzhaus sits at 1,418m in the Ötscher massif, a limestone range in Lower Austria that rises steeply from the Erlauf valley. The hut is accessible from Lackenhof am Ötscher, which lies at the end of the Ötscher-Törlbach valley road. Most hikers approach via the marked trail from Lackenhof, a hike of roughly 2–2.5 hours depending on your pace and which route you take. The Ötscher region offers solid day hiking across mixed terrain: limestone ridge walks, forested slopes, and views north toward the Danube lowlands.

The hut is run by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and provides basic mountain shelter with bunk bed accommodation. Meals are available—expect simple Austrian fare rather than fine dining. Flush toilets mark the standard of facilities; note that water is limited at this elevation in dry periods, so conservation matters. The hut operates year-round but busies significantly during weekends in summer and autumn, when the Ötscher circuit attracts day walkers and weekend hikers from Vienna and surrounding regions.

Book ahead during July and August, and for weekends April through October. Contact the hut directly by email or phone to reserve beds and confirm meal availability. The hut fills quickly on clear-weather weekends, especially in autumn when the beech forests turn and accessible ridge walks draw crowds. Arrive with cash for payment; card facilities may be limited. Allow for variable weather at this elevation; the Ötscher is exposed and conditions change rapidly.
