Schutzhaus Vorderötscher

Schutzhaus Vorderötscher sits at 1,532m in the Ötscher massif, about 90 minutes' walk above Lackenhof in the Ybbstal. Drive to Lackenhof, then follow the marked trail steeply uphill through forest. The hut anchors a network of day walks across limestone ridges and down to the Ötscher-Tormäuer gorge. Most hikers approach from the Göstling-Ötschergräben side or traverse to Ötscher-Alm, 1.5 hours south.
The hut has 42 beds across 9 private rooms and shared dormitories. Half-board is standard in season. Flush toilets are available. The kitchen serves straightforward Austrian fare. The hut operates year-round, though winter conditions make the approach technical. Book directly by email or phone well ahead, especially for weekends April through October. Winter weekends fill three months out. July and August can be busy on weekends. The OeAV manages the hut. Solo hikers and small groups should find space outside peak times. The hut sits between accessible day-walk country and longer ridge traverses, which makes it useful as a base rather than a pure transit point.
