Waldfreundehütte

Waldfreundehütte sits at 1464m in the Mostviertel region of Lower Austria, accessible from the village of Lackenhof am Ötscher. The approach takes 2–2.5 hours on foot from Lackenhof station, following marked trails through mixed forest typical of this region. You can also reach the hut from Ötscher-Basis or via longer ridge routes if you're linking multi-day routes in the area. The elevation is moderate, making this hut a good base for walkers who want mountain scenery without high-altitude demands.
The hut is run by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and sleeps around 40 people in simple dormitory accommodation. Meals are available, including hearty evening menus and breakfast packs for early starts. Facilities include basic bunks with blankets and pillows provided. Water comes from a spring. The hut opens year-round but operates at reduced capacity during winter months; contact ahead if visiting November to March. This is a working mountain hut, not a hotel—expect traditional Alpine hospitality and a sociable atmosphere with other hikers.
Book directly with the hut by phone or email, especially for weekends and summer school holidays. Groups of 8 or more should book several weeks ahead. July and August see heavy use, so book 4–6 weeks in advance for those months. Half-board packages are available and recommended if you want to avoid carrying cooking gear.
