Zdarsky Hut

Zdarsky Hütte sits at 1,082m in the Türnitz Alps southeast of Lilienfeld in Lower Austria. Reach it from Lilienfeld town (take the train from Vienna or St. Pölten) by hiking 2.5 hours northwest through mixed forest. The trail is well-marked and moderate, climbing 400m with minimal exposure. You can also start from the Türnitz valley villages to the south, adding 1–2 hours depending on your approach. The hut works as a halfway point on longer ridge walks toward Rainfeld or as a base for local day hikes.
The hut offers 60 beds in mixed dorms and some double rooms. Meals are available: dinner, breakfast, and packed lunches. Water and basic facilities are reliable. Opening runs year-round, though confirm availability in winter months before heading up. The OeAV manages the hut and maintains the surrounding trail network. Afternoons draw casual hikers from the valley, so expect company on weekends.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for summer Saturdays and Austrian school holidays. Contact the hut directly by phone or email—online booking systems are unreliable for this smaller operation. The caretaker speaks German primarily; have someone translate if needed or learn key phrases. Solo walkers and groups of four or fewer find beds more readily than larger parties.
