Ebenseer Hochkogelhütte

Ebenseer Hochkogelhütte sits at 1,558m on the Hochkogel in the Salzkammergut region south of Ebensee. Reach it in 2.5 hours from the village of Ebensee, heading southeast through mixed forest that opens to Alpine meadows as you climb. The trail is straightforward and well-marked. You can also approach from Langbathseen lake to the south, adding 30 minutes but offering a different perspective of the limestone plateau.
The hut is run by Naturfreunde Ebensee and holds 61 beds across dormitories and 5 private rooms. It serves hearty Austrian meals for dinner and breakfast. There's no WiFi, so you'll actually disconnect. The building has a wood-fired stove and a small library of Alpine guides. It operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche risk. The hut makes a logical base for exploring the Hochkogel plateau or a halfway point on longer traverses into the Totes Gebirge.
