Eiskarhütte

The Eiskarhütte sits at 1,700m in the Tennengebirge, a limestone massif east of Salzburg. Reach it from Annaberg-Lungötz in the Lammertal valley. The standard approach takes 2.5 hours following the marked trail past Übergossene Alm. This is a straightforward Alpine hut walk, not technical terrain. The hut serves as a base for ridge walks across the Tennengebirge and routes toward Hochkönig to the south. Winter access is possible but becomes serious once snow deepens.
The OeAV-managed hut has 40 beds across small dorms and a few double rooms. Half-board is standard: the kitchen serves decent Austrian fare and vegetarian options. Simple but functional facilities include basic showers and an outhouse. Opening runs from April through October, with variable hours in shoulder months—check ahead before visiting in late autumn. The atmosphere stays quiet and working, rarely busy even in peak season.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Reserve directly with the hut by phone or email. Weekday visits often have space available without advance notice. Winter opening depends on snow conditions and the guardian's schedule; confirm before planning a winter trip.
