About

Hachaualm sits at 1,485m in the Tennengebirge massif, south of Hallein in the Salzburg Alps. Reach it from the village of Adnet in 90 minutes on foot via the Lehental valley, or from Bad Vigaun via the longer Buchauer Alm route. The approach is steady uphill on clear alpine paths through mixed forest and meadow. Most hikers approach from Adnet, which has road access and limited parking near the trailhead.

The hut is a simple mountain dairy operation (Sennalm) run by the OeAV, offering basic accommodation in a traditional wooden building. It sleeps around 25 people in shared dormitory rooms. Meals focus on hearty alpine fare—the hut makes its own butter and cheese from summer grazing cattle. Full board is standard rather than the exception. The hut operates mid-June to mid-September only, closing for winter and spring when cattle haven't yet moved to summer pasture. Water comes from mountain springs. Toilets are basic but functional.

Book direct by phone or email at least 2 weeks ahead during July and August. Friday and Saturday nights fill fastest. The hut takes cash and bank transfer only—no cards. Arrive by late afternoon if you want hot water for washing. Cell reception is poor; call ahead from the valley. The hut works best as a base for day walks into the Tennengebirge or as a midpoint on longer hut-to-hut routes across the range. The immediate surroundings offer gentle ridge walks and views north toward the Salzach valley.
