Kührointhütte

Kührointhütte sits at 1,928m in the Berchtesgaden Alps south of Salzburg, on the main hiking route between Ramsau and Schellenbergalm. Reach it in 2.5 hours from the Ramsau valley on a well-maintained trail with steady elevation gain. The hut anchors the crossroads of several classic day routes through limestone karst terrain, making it a natural lunch stop or overnight base for ridge walking and peak bagging in this compact, high-traffic hiking zone.

The hut runs 40 beds across simple dorm rooms and a few private doubles. Meals are solid Austrian mountain fare—expect hearty soups, schnitzel, and sausage plates. The keeper runs a relaxed operation with no pretense; the dining room fills quickly at lunchtime with day hikers. Opening season is typically late May through October. No WiFi. Water is reliable. Toilets are basic but clean. The hut operates independently, not as part of the OeAV or DAV networks, which gives it a different character than the big institutional huts.

Book by phone at least two weeks ahead for weekends. July and August are crushingly busy—aim for June or September if you want breathing room. The hut handles overflow by serving food to day hikers on the terrace even when beds are full, so don't skip it if you can't find overnight space. Single night stays are normal here, not discouraged.
