Leiterhütte

Leiterhütte sits at 2,177m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, accessible from the Königssee region near Berchtesgaden. Approach from the village of Schönau takes 3.5 to 4 hours via the Salet area and the steep Hirschbach valley. The final stretch climbs steeply but reliably marked. In winter, the approach becomes significantly harder and should only be attempted by parties with winter mountaineering experience. Most hikers reach the hut in summer or early autumn. The location works as a base for the Watzmann massif or as a day-trip destination for strong walkers from the northern Austrian lakes region.
Leiterhütte is a small, traditional hut run by the Salzburg section of the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV). It sleeps around 50 people in dormitories and a few private rooms. Meals focus on hearty alpine fare—expect good soups, stews, and simple proteins. Water comes directly from the mountain. The hut has no shower facilities. Bedding and blankets are provided. The hut operates from May through October, closing during winter months when snow and avalanche risk make access dangerous. Cell reception is unreliable; bring a headtorch and expect basic conditions.
Book directly with the hut by phone or email at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. June and September see fewer visitors and offer more flexible booking. Arrive by early afternoon to secure a bed and allow time for the kitchen to prepare dinner. The hut is popular with Munich-based climbers on weekends, so midweek visits offer quieter conditions.
