About

Speikkofelhütte sits at 2,415m in the Radstädter Tauern, a 2-hour walk from the Radstädter Tauern Pass road (1,738m). The approach is straightforward: park at the pass and follow the marked trail south across alpine meadows, gaining 680m steadily. The hut stands on the ridge between Speikkofel and Seekarspitze, giving access to winter ski touring and summer climbing in the Radstädter Tauern group. It's a good base for traversing the range or climbing Seekarspitze (2,880m) in 1.5 hours.

The hut is managed by the Salzburg section of the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and provides 40 beds split between small dorms and a few double rooms. Half-board meals are included with overnight stays. The kitchen serves typical Alpine fare. Water is from a spring. The hut has basic shower facilities and no electricity—bring a headtorch. It opens mid-June through September, depending on snow conditions. Winter access requires ski touring or winter mountaineering skills; the hut can be used in winter by prior arrangement with the warden.

Book directly with the hut from April onwards, especially for July and August weekends when it fills quickly. Contact details are available through the OeAV website. The hut is popular with Salzburg-based hikers doing ridge traverses, so expect company during school holidays. Arrive early in the day if you haven't reserved ahead.
