Mitterastenalm

Mitterastenalm sits at 1,860m on the eastern flank of the Tennengebirge, above the Salzach valley near Werfen. Reach it from the village of Weißbach an der Leoganterbauer in roughly 2 hours on foot. The trail climbs steadily through mixed forest, gaining about 700m elevation. This is straightforward hiking on marked paths—no scrambling required. The hut serves as a solid base for ridge walks across the Tennengebirge and day trips into the surrounding limestone peaks.
Mitterastenalm is run by the Salzburg section of the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV). The hut accommodates around 30 people in simple dormitory rooms. It serves hot meals at lunch and dinner, with vegetarian options available. Breakfast is included for overnight guests. Water comes from a spring on the property. The hut operates year-round, though winter conditions make access more difficult—check snow status before heading up from November to March. Staff speak German and basic English.
Book directly by phone before arriving, especially on weekends and during school holidays (Austrian summer holidays run mid-July to early September). One week ahead is usually sufficient outside peak season. Expect to pay around €15–20 for a bed, €10 for dinner, and €8 for breakfast. The hut accepts cash and card payments. If the hut is full, staff can sometimes arrange space in a local farm guesthouse lower down the valley.
