About

The Obere Mooshütte sits at 2,320m in the Hohe Tauern range above the Möll Valley. Reach it from Wörth (near Heiligenblut) in 4 hours of solid climbing via the Moostal. The route gains 1,200m and is steep but well-marked. You can also approach from the Pasterze Glacier side in 3.5 hours if conditions allow. Both routes require mountain fitness; don't treat this as a casual afternoon walk.
This hut is a proper mountaineer's base, not a tourism destination. The OeAV Sektion Spittal an der Drau runs it with around 80 beds across simple dormitories. The kitchen serves filling meals and packed lunches for the next day. Water comes from mountain streams. There are no showers, limited electricity, and no phone signal—bring a power bank if you need one. The hut operates mid-June through September, weather-dependent. Winter closure is firm.
Book direct with the hut from May onwards; July and August fill quickly, especially weekends. Contact via post or email through the OeAV Sektion Spittal an der Drau website. A deposit secures your place. Arrive by 6pm if possible; the warden doesn't hold meals past 8pm. The hut is a launching point for traverses in the Hohe Tauern and acclimatization for higher peaks. Bring a headtorch and layers—weather changes fast above 2,300m.
