About

Adlerhorst sits at 2,335m on the Hochkönig massif, east of the Salzburg town of Maria Alm. The standard approach takes 3.5 hours from the Thorerböden car park via the steep Hochkönig trail. You can also reach it in 2.5 hours from Dienten am Pass to the south. The hut marks a natural stopping point on the multi-day Hochkönig circuit and offers views across the Berchtesgaden range.

The hut operates year-round and sleeps 22 guests in dormitory rooms. Meals are basic but substantial: hearty soups, meat dishes, and fresh bread. The water supply depends on snowmelt and rainfall, so water availability can be tight in dry periods. Toilets are outside. There's no shower. The guardian manages the hut alone, so service is straightforward rather than elaborate. The small terrace catches afternoon sun in good weather.

Book 3–4 months ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the Adlerhorst directly through the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) Salzburg section. The hut fills quickly during school holidays and August. June and September offer far fewer crowds and equally reliable weather for hiking. Arrive before 15:00 to ensure a meal. The hut accepts cash only—bring euros.
