Palfneralm

Palfneralm sits at 1,330m on the eastern flank of the Tennengebirge, above the Salzach Valley. Reach it from Puch an der Salzach by hiking 3 hours north through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The route is steady and well-marked but gains 730m elevation. You can also approach from the Lammertal to the east, though this takes longer. Summer access is straightforward; winter routes depend on snow conditions.

This is a working alpine dairy farm that operates as a simple hut. The operator serves fresh dairy products, hearty Salzburg fare, and drinks from a small bar. Capacity is modest—around 30 beds in basic dormitory rooms. The hut has no shower facilities; expect running water and simple washrooms. It functions as a working alm (alpine pasture), so the atmosphere reflects farm life rather than tourist infrastructure. Open May through October depending on weather and pastoral season.
