Peter-Wiechenthaler-Hut

Peter-Wiechenthaler-Hütte sits at 1,752m on the Saalbach plateau in the Saalfelden Alps, roughly 90 minutes' walk from Saalbach village. Approach from Saalbach on marked trail 5 heading south through mixed forest and alpine pasture. The hut is a solid base for day walks across the plateau and routes toward the Hochkönig massif to the east. Access is straightforward year-round via established paths—no scrambling required.

The hut holds 60 beds across simple rooms. Meals are Austrian standard: hearty lunches and multi-course dinners using local meat and dairy. The kitchen serves coffee and cake mid-afternoon. Water comes from the spring; there is no shower. The hut opens year-round but runs at minimal staffing November to March, so phone ahead in winter. Drying facilities and a small stube with wood stove anchor the common areas. The building is functional rather than new—expect basic Alpine hut comfort, not resort amenities.
