About

Präerhütte sits at 1,827m in the Steinernes Meer massif, roughly 10km south of Golling an der Salzach. The standard approach is from Golling via the Salzach valley to Vorderweißbach, then southeast along the Weißbach trail to reach the hut in 4 to 5 hours. A steeper alternative climbs from Koppl in the Salzach valley, taking about 3.5 hours. The hut marks the eastern gateway to the Steinernes Meer's network of limestone plateaus and is a natural base for traverses into Bavaria's Berchtesgaden Alps. Most routes require scrambling ability and route-finding skills; the terrain is not a marked hiking park.
Präerhütte is run by the Salzburg branch of the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and has 38 beds across shared rooms. The kitchen provides full board (dinner and breakfast) or packed lunches. The hut has a small bar and basic drying facilities. Water comes from a spring. The hut operates year-round but is quieter in winter; many climbers use it as a staging point for winter ascents and ski tours in the high terrain above. Cell signal is poor.
Book directly with the hut 6 to 8 weeks ahead for summer Saturdays and holiday weeks. Contact the Salzburg OeAV section for current opening hours and winter conditions. The hut fills quickly during July and August, and many weekends from May through September are fully booked. Arrive early in the day if you haven't reserved.
