About
Thaler-Mahder Hütte sits at 2,022m in the Kitzbühel Alps southeast of Salzburg. The standard approach is from Aurach am Wildseeloch via Wildseeloch Pass. This route takes 3 hours and climbs steadily through beech forest then alpine meadow. An alternative, longer approach comes from Fieberbrunn to the north, taking 4 hours. Both paths are well-marked and hikeable in summer hiking boots.
The hut is run by the Salzburg section of the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and holds 40 beds in simple but clean rooms. Half-board is available; the kitchen serves filling Austrian fare and doesn't rely on freeze-dried meals. Breakfast and evening meals included with half-board. The hut has running water, pit toilets, and a small common room. Open mid-May through early October. This is a working hut, not a luxury refuge—expect no electricity in rooms and basic facilities, which is exactly what most hikers want at this elevation.
Book directly with the hut from February onwards for July and August, as weekends fill quickly. Email or phone at least 6 weeks ahead for summer weekends. The hut is quietest in June and September. It's a solid base for day walks into the surrounding Kitzbühel Alps: Wildsee lake (1 hour), Wildes Kaiser traverse, or traverses toward Rauschberg. The location is low enough that it's accessible early and late season, but high enough to guarantee cool nights.
