Pronebenalm

Pronebenalm sits at 1274m in the Salzburg Alps, east of the Unternberg massif. Reach it from Unternberg village via a steady 2-hour hike through mixed forest. The route is well-marked but gains 650m elevation steadily. Start early if combining this with other peaks in the area. The hut lies on the approach to Unternberg's ridgeline, making it a logical base for a day exploring the surrounding ridges and summits.

The alm operates as a simple mountain farm with a small guesthouse function. Accommodation is basic—typically 15–20 beds in shared rooms. They serve traditional Alpine fare: schnitzel, kasnocken, and hearty soups. The hut relies on its own water supply and generator, so facilities are modest but functional. Opening season runs May to October, with a break in November. Call ahead to confirm availability in shoulder months. This is a working dairy farm first, a guesthouse second. Expect a quiet, unglamorous place where you're accommodated alongside agricultural activity. The charm lies in its simplicity and its position on genuine hiking terrain, not in amenities. Book at least 2 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Arrive prepared for basic conditions and potentially early dinner service (around 6pm). Half-board is standard practice here.
