Scharten Hut

The Scharten Hütte sits at 1504m on the Scharten saddle in the Tennengebirge, south of Hallein in the Salzburg Alps. Reach it from Adnet (valley base) via the Wimbach valley trail, a steady 3–4 hour ascent through forest and alpine meadow. The approach is direct and well-marked. From the hut, you can push higher into the limestone peaks or traverse toward the Hochkönig massif to the east.
The hut is run by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and offers 30 beds across simple shared dormitory rooms. Meals are hearty and filling: expect decent breakfast, soup-based lunches, and substantial dinners using local ingredients. The hut has running water, basic toilets, and a small common room with views across the Salzburg lowlands. It operates year-round but staffing is light in winter—check ahead if you're coming December to February. Half-board (bed plus breakfast and dinner) is standard and recommended, given the remote location and limited village facilities below.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for summer weekends and July–August. Contact the hut directly by phone or email; many Austrian huts don't use online booking systems. The hut is not heavily trafficked compared to showpiece destinations, so mid-week slots open up quickly even in peak season. If you're hiking the Tennengebirge ridge or using this as a base for day climbs on surrounding limestone, this is a solid, no-nonsense option.
