Roßbrandhütte

The Roßbrandhütte sits at 1,712m in the Berchtesgaden Alps south of Salzburg. Approach from Marktschellenberg (Germany side) via the Vorbergweg in 2.5 hours, or from Berchtesgaden via Königssee in 3 hours. The Austrian approach from Salzburg takes longer but offers a quieter route through the Bluntau valley. This is a working base for ridge traverses and scrambles across the Hochkalter massif.
The hut has 60 beds split across dormitories and a few double rooms. The OeAV manages it. Meals focus on hearty mountain fare—order dinner when you book. The building has a small bar and runs year-round, though winter conditions can be severe and access becomes weather-dependent. Facilities are basic: no shower but washrooms function well. The location works best for fit hikers doing multi-pitch scrambling or mountaineering—expect Grade II-III climbing on nearby summits like the Hochkalter (2,607m).
Book directly through OeAV or contact the hut by phone 6+ weeks ahead for July and August. Weekends fill fast during summer. The hut prefers advance notice for dinner (order by 2pm). Winter mountaineering parties should confirm access before arrival. Solo hikers will find company—the Hochkalter circuit draws a steady stream of German and Austrian climbers.
