Sarsteinalm Bad Goisern

Sarsteinalm sits at 1,711m on the eastern flank of the Sarstein massif, above the village of Bad Goisern in the Salzkammergut. Reach it in 2 hours from Bad Goisern village by following the marked trail through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The approach gains 700m steadily but without steep sections. In winter, access is often weather-dependent; check conditions locally before heading up.

The hut sleeps around 40 people across basic dormitories and a few double rooms. Meals focus on Austrian mountain food—hearty soups, schnitzel, and strudel. The kitchen provides hot drinks and simple snacks throughout the day. Toilet facilities are basic but functional. The hut operates year-round, though winter visits require good snow sense and appropriate gear. It's run by local alpinists rather than a major Alpine club, giving it a straightforward, working-hut atmosphere. Views across the Salzkammergut plateau are clear on settled days.

Book at least 2 weeks ahead for weekends and school holidays. July and August fill quickly. Contact the hut directly by phone or email—there's no online booking system. The hut sits on a popular circuit linking Bad Goisern to surrounding peaks and valley huts, so it serves as both a destination and a transit stop on longer traverses.
