Lambacher Hut

Lambacher Hütte sits at 1432m in the Salzkammergut region south of Lambach, in Upper Austria. Reach it from the village of Lambach via the Ödstal valley. The approach takes 1.5 to 2 hours on a well-marked hiking trail through mixed forest, gaining roughly 500m elevation steadily but not steeply. Most parties approach from the north, though the hut also serves as a waypoint for longer ridge traverses in the surrounding limestone hills.

The hut operates year-round and managed by OeAV Sektion Lambach. It sleeps 40 people across dormitory rooms and offers simple half-board (dinner and breakfast included with overnight stay). The kitchen serves straightforward Austrian mountain fare—schnitzel, soups, and hearty stews. Self-catering is not permitted. Facilities include a small bar, drying room for boots and gear, and a wood-heated common area. Outside toilets and a basic washhouse reflect the hut's traditional, unfussy character. Water comes from a spring on the property.

Book direct by phone or email with the hut keeper; they speak German primarily, so a translation app helps if you don't speak the language. July and August weekends fill months ahead—book 4-6 weeks in advance for peak season. Weekday slots open up faster. The hut works well as a base for day hikes into the local limestone formations or as a stopping point on longer valley-to-summit itineraries. Winter access depends on snow conditions; confirm with the hut before visiting November through March.
