Steiner-Hochalm

Steiner-Hochalm sits at 1,550m in the Salzburg Alps, above the Steinertal valley near Unken. Reach it from the village of Unken (accessible by train or car) via a steady hiking trail that takes 2–2.5 hours. The final approach follows a forest path with moderate elevation gain. You can also access it from adjacent valleys in the Saalfelden–Leogang region for multi-day ridge traverses.
The hut is a simple mountain inn run as a working dairy farm. It has 25–30 beds in mixed dormitories and a few double rooms. Meals focus on hearty Austrian fare—Kaiserschmarrn, Kasnocken, and local cheese feature regularly. The kitchen serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner; book meals ahead if you're not staying overnight. Water comes from the alpine spring. There's no electricity in rooms (charged lamps available), and heating relies on traditional stoves. The hut operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions.
Book directly by phone or in writing at least 2 weeks ahead during July and August. The hut gets busy on weekends year-round. June and September offer quieter conditions with reliable weather. The Steiner-Hochalm functions as a genuine working hut rather than a tourist facility—expect basic comfort and a working farm atmosphere.
