About

Steinitzenalm sits at 1,640m on the Steinitzen plateau in the Salzburg Slate Alps, roughly 12km south of Unken. Reach it from the village of Unken (about 1 hour 20 minutes by car from Salzburg city) and hike uphill for 2–2.5 hours via marked trails. The approach starts gentle through forest then steepens on the final climb. You can also approach from the Weißbach valley to the east, adding another 30 minutes. The hut is a simple working alpine dairy operation first, hiking accommodation second.

The alm operates as a traditional summer dairy farm producing cheese and butter. It offers 6 beds in basic rooms shared with the farming family's daily rhythms. Meals focus on hearty mountain fare: expect good bread, cheese, milk, and simple hot food in the evenings. There's no shower; the washroom is cold water only. The hut sits in open grassland with views toward the Chiemgau Alps to the north. It closes outside the summer season (roughly May to September, though dates depend on snow and farm operations). Book accommodation through the OeAV (Austrian Alpine Club) or contact the hut directly beforehand.

This is not a comfortable refuge with hot showers and packed lunches. Go for authentic alpine dairy experience, local cheese, and hiking in quieter terrain away from the main valley huts. July and August are busiest; early June and September offer more solitude. Confirm opening dates before planning your trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book at least 2–3 months ahead, especially for weekends and July–August; the hut has only 6 beds and fills quickly.
Open June to September, staffed daily during peak season; check ahead for exact opening and closing dates as it operates as a working dairy.
Drive to Unken (1 hour 20 minutes from Salzburg city), then hike 2–2.5 hours via marked trails through forest with a steep final climb; alternative approach from Weißbach valley adds 30 minutes.
Expect basic facilities and simple meals—this is a working alpine dairy first, so amenities are modest; bring cash and ask about meal options when you book.
It's suitable for hikers with some experience due to the steep final section and remote location; not ideal for families with young children given the small capacity and spartan setup.
