Wintertalerhütte

Wintertalerhütte sits at 1,536m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, roughly 15km south of Salzburg city. The standard approach is from Anif village: take the footpath up Wintertal valley for 2.5 hours to reach the hut. The route gains 700m steadily through forested terrain, becoming steeper near the hut. In summer, a rough mountain road can be driven partway up, reducing the walk to 1.5 hours. This is a popular base for day hikes in the surrounding area, particularly the traverse to Café Wald and the ridge routes northeast towards the Göll massif.
The hut is managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and operates year-round, with restricted winter services from November to April. It sleeps roughly 50 people across dormitory and double rooms. Half-board (dinner and breakfast) is standard. The kitchen produces decent food; bring cash as card payment is unreliable. Toilets are basic but clean. There's no shower. Mobile signal is poor but WiFi works inconsistently. The hut is family-friendly and sits in quieter terrain than the crowded Tennengebirge to the north.
