About

The Zeppezauerhaus is the classic Alpine Club hut on the Untersberg, the striking limestone massif that rises directly above Salzburg on the Austrian–German border. It stands at 1,663 m on the north side of the mountain, only a few minutes below the Geiereck and close to the summit region of the Salzburger Hochthron. The hut is owned and run by the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV), Sektion Salzburg, and has been a Salzburg institution for well over a century. It offers 53 places to sleep — 14 beds and 39 dormitory (Matratzenlager) spaces — and a kitchen serving hearty regional fare; it is open daily from 1 May to 26 October, roughly 07:00–22:00. The easiest way up is the Untersbergbahn cable car from Grödig–St. Leonhard to the Geiereck station, from where AV-Weg 213 reaches the hut in about 20 minutes. Fit walkers can instead climb on foot from Glanegg in around 2.5 hours, either by the Reitsteig (AV-Weg 211) or the demanding, cable-secured Dopplersteig (AV-Weg 212). Its balcony over the city, easy cable-car access and nearby summit walks make it one of the most visited huts around Salzburg.
