Herrenboden

Herrenboden sits at 1402m in the Sölk Valley (Sölktal) in Styria, a quieter alternative to the busier Zillertal. The hut is reached on foot from Sölk-Bad, a 90-minute walk on a clear trail through mixed forest that gains roughly 500m. Most hikers arrive as part of multi-day Sölktal traverses, though day-trippers from the valley floor are common. The location works as a base for exploring the eastern Sölk Alps: aim for the ridge walks northward or the longer push to higher peaks along the main crest. Winter access depends on snow and avalanche conditions; confirm with the hut before planning a cold-season trip.
The hut is run as a basic Alpine hut with capacity for around 50 guests. Expect simple dormitory rooms and a few private doubles. Meals are hearty half-board fare rather than fine dining—soups, stews, and local Styrian standards. The hut has a small shop for basic supplies and top-ups. Book in summer months (June–August) 4–6 weeks ahead for weekends. Outside peak season, walk-ins are normally accepted.
