Tonionhütte

Tonionhütte sits at 1,520m in the Sölk Valley (Sölktal) in Styria's northern limestone Alps. Reach it from Gußwerk by hiking 2.5 hours up a well-marked trail through beech forest and alpine meadow. The path gains 500m steadily but never steeply. In summer, you can also approach from the Obertauern Pass side, though this route takes longer. The hut works as a base for day walks into the surrounding peaks and valleys, or as a stop on multi-day traverses across the Sölk Alps.
The Naturfreunde (Austrian Alpine Association) operates this modest mountain hut with 30 beds across several rooms. They serve hot meals at dinner and packed lunches on request. The kitchen produces straightforward Austrian mountain food: soups, stews, schnitzel, and simple vegetarian options. Water comes from a spring. The hut has no shower but provides washbasins and a basic toilet. A small common room with a wood stove is where guests gather in the evening. The hut opens mid-May through late September, depending on snow and weather.

Half-board (bed, dinner, breakfast) costs around €60–70 per person. Pay by cash at the hut or arrange bank transfer in advance. The hut has no mobile signal; use the landline or email for contact.
