Himberger Haus

Himberger Haus sits at 980m in the Fischbach Valley near Himberg in southern Styria. Reach it from the village of Himberg by hiking 1.5 hours uphill through forest on a marked trail. The approach is steady but straightforward, gaining 300m elevation with no technical sections. This location puts you within reach of ridge walks and alpine meadow routes across the Koralpe and surrounding hills.
The hut sleeps around 30 people in mixed dormitory rooms. Naturfreunde Himberg runs a simple operation: expect basic meals (soup, schnitzel, standard Austrian fare) and drinking water. There are no showers, so come prepared for that. The kitchen will cook for groups if you book ahead. The hut opens year-round but is busier on weekends and during school holidays. Summer hiking season (May to October) is the main period, though the hut functions as a winter base for cross-country skiers and snowshoers.
Book by phone contact with Naturfreunde Himberg directly—they don't use online reservation systems. Call ahead if you're bringing a group, especially for meal arrangements. Weekends fill quickly from May onwards, so phone 2–3 weeks ahead for Saturday or Sunday stays during the school holidays. Weekday visits in shoulder seasons (April, October) rarely need advance booking.
