Plotscherbauer

Plotscherbauer sits at 1133m in the Koralpe region of southern Styria, a quieter alternative to the crowded huts further north. The hut lies on hiking routes linking the Fischbacher Alpen and Koralpe massifs. Approach from the village of Fischbach in roughly 2 hours on marked trails through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The location works well as a base for day walks across the Koralpe plateau or as a waypoint on multi-day ridge traverses toward Deutschlandsberg.
Plotscherbauer operates as a traditional farmhouse hut run by the Österreichischer Alpenverein (OeAV). Expect simple, mountain-focused accommodation with around 20 beds in basic dormitory and double rooms. The kitchen serves hearty Austrian food at lunch and dinner. Water comes from the hut's own spring. The hut stays open year-round but offers full services only during hiking season (May to October). Winter visits are possible by prior arrangement with the keeper.
Book your stay directly with the hut by phone or email at least 2–3 weeks ahead during July and August. Outside peak season, you can often find space with a few days' notice. The hut accepts cash payment. Bring sturdy boots; the trails to and from Plotscherbauer are steep in sections, especially after wet weather.
