Waldburgangerhütte

The Waldburgangerhütte sits at 1,182m in the Stubalpe range of eastern Styria, on the border region between Styria and Upper Austria. Reach it from the village of Waldburg via a steady 2-hour hike through beech forest on well-marked trails. The approach gains roughly 400m elevation and follows traditional hiking routes popular with locals. From Graz, drive to Waldburg (about 60km north), then park near the village to start your walk. This is a gateway hut for ridge walks across the Stubalpe plateau and day hikes into the surrounding forested hills.
The hut is a traditional alpine lodge run by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV). It has capacity for around 30 guests in simple dormitory and a few private rooms. The kitchen serves basic alpine fare: hearty soups, schnitzel, local dairy products, and fresh bread. Expect no-frills comfort—clean beds, reliable heating, and a communal dining area. The hut operates year-round, though spring and autumn are best for hiking. Winter access depends on snow conditions; phone ahead if visiting November to March.
Book directly by phone several weeks ahead if you're coming in summer weekends or during the main hiking season (May–October). July and August require advance notice. The hut caters mainly to hikers doing day routes in the region rather than through-hikers on long-distance trails, so walk-ins may find space on quieter days but don't rely on it.
