Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben

Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben sits at 1,250m in the Stubalpe range of Styria, close to the village of Stübing. The hut is an easy 1.5-hour walk from the Stubalpe road, making it accessible for families and casual hikers. From Stübing, follow marked trails through mixed forest toward the Knofeleben ridge. The approach gains around 350m elevation steadily but without steep sections.
The Naturfreunde-managed hut offers 30 beds split across dormitory rooms and a few doubles. Meals are available on weekends and public holidays year-round, with extended service during peak summer months (July–August). The hut has a basic kitchen if you prefer self-catering, running water, and toilet facilities. This is a working hut, not a destination in itself—it functions as a base for day hikes across the Stubalpe and as a resting point on longer routes through Styrian hill country. The surrounding area has gentle ridge walks, forest trails, and connections to other huts in the network.
Book directly with the hut by phone or email several weeks ahead for weekends in July and August, especially if you need the smaller double rooms. Winter weekends can be busy with locals. The hut closes irregularly during shoulder seasons, so confirm opening dates before planning your trip. Meals require advance notice—ring at least one day ahead.
