Alpengasthaus Karwendel

Alpengasthaus Karwendel sits at 1480m on the northern flank of the Karwendel range, roughly 30km south of Innsbruck. The hut is accessible by car up the Rissbach valley to Engalm, then a 1.5-hour walk southwest through forest. Most hikers approach from the north via the Engalm-Alm trail. The location makes it a natural base for day walks into the Karwendel massif and a staging point on longer traverses heading toward Zillertal or the Ötztal.
The hut offers around 50 beds across simple double and multi-bed rooms. Hot meals are served daily—expect Austrian standards like Eintopf, Kaiserschmarrn, and Knödelsuppe rather than fine dining. There's a common room with a wood stove, and the kitchen can handle special diets if you notify them in advance. Alpengasthaus Karwendel operates year-round but is quieter from November to March. Phone ahead during winter to confirm availability.
Book direct by phone or email at least 2-3 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Shoulder seasons (May-June, September) rarely need advance booking. The hut sits on OeAV-marked trails but isn't managed by the Alpine Club directly, so don't assume reciprocal membership discounts apply. Parking at Engalm is straightforward and costs around €5 per day.
