Gütenbergalm

Gütenbergalm sits at 1545m on the eastern slopes of the Zillertal, a major hiking hub in central Tyrol. You reach it from the village of Schlitters via a steady 2-hour climb through mixed forest and alpine pasture. The trail is well-marked and moderate. In winter, a road is plowed to within 30 minutes' walk of the hut, but summer access is foot-only. The hut makes sense as a base for multi-day tours across the Zillertal or as a stop on longer ridge traverses linking to neighboring peaks like the Habicht or Wildes Geiger.
Gütenbergalm is family-run and operates year-round, though phone ahead in winter to confirm. It has 20 beds in simple rooms. The kitchen serves traditional Tyrolean fare—schnitzel, speck, fresh milk. You can request packed lunches. The building has a wood stove, a small bar, and views across the valley. No wifi or electricity in rooms, which suits hikers wanting to disconnect. The outhouse is basic but functional. Water comes from a spring above the hut.
Book directly by phone or email 2-3 weeks ahead for weekends in July and August. The hut fills quickly when the Zillertal weather is stable. Half-board rates are fair. Arrive before 1700 if you haven't confirmed a meal. The warden closes the door at dusk year-round.
